20 major causes of hair loss

Although men are likely to have hair loss more than women, thinning hair and hair loss are also common in women. Hair loss can happen either due to lack of Vitamin in body or it may be the sign of some other major health condition.
1. Physical stress: 
Any stress like surgery or a car accident or severe illness can cause temporary hair loss.Hair has a programmed life cycle- a growth phase, rest phase and shedding phase. Stress pushes most hair to shedding phase and you have hair fall. But this loss is temporary. Soon hair starts regenerating once your health starts improving. Hair loss often becomes noticeable three to six months after trauma.

2. Pregnancy:
Hair loss related to pregnancy becomes noticeable after the baby is delivered. The trauma of giving birth and the imbalance in hormones cause hair loss in pregnancy. The effect is temporary.

3. Excessive vitamin A
The daily value for Vitamin A is 5000 International Units(IU)  for adults and kids above 4 yrs of age. The medication if supplies excessive Vitamin A, then the patient is bound to have a hair loss. But hair starts growing once excessive Vitamin A is stopped.

4. Lack of protein:

Whenever a body does not get sufficient amount of protein from a diet, it tries to fulfill the gap by shutting down hair growth. It can happen about 2 to 3 months after the body starts getting insufficient protein. but the hair loss is temporary.

5. Male pattern Baldness:
About 2 out of 3 men experience hair loss by age 60. It occurs due to imbalance in genes and male sex hormones. You can either apply cream like minoxidil( Rogaine) or take oral medication like finasteride( Propecia).

6. Heredity:
If you come from a family where women started to have hair loss at certain age, you are more likely to have it. Minoxidil(Rogaine) can be applied in case of women too.

7. Female Hormones:
If you are taking birth control pills or if you are in state of menopause, it changes the hormonal balance leading to hair loss.

8. Emotional Stress:
Emotional stress will not actually precipitate hair loss but will exacerbate the problem that is already there.

9. Anemia:
Almost 1 in 10 women aged 20 through 49 suffers from anemia due to iron deficiency. Hair loss is one of the symptoms of anemia.

10. Hypothyroidism:
When the glands located in neck fails to produce the required quantity of hormones, one can suffer a hair loss. One may opt to synthetic thyroid medication for recovery.

Technically called alopecia areata, whenever our body possess overactive immune system, it treats hair to be  foreign substance and target hair. Steroid injections are really helpful in this case.

Lupus is another auto- immune disease which causes permanent hair loss.

14. Dramatic weight loss:
Sudden weight loss creates stress in a body which causes hair loss. It may take about 6 months for control of hair fall.

15. Chemo therapy:
Chemo therapy destroys rapidly dividing cells including hair. Hair regenerates once therapy is stopped but it may have different color and texture.

16. Polycystic ovary syndrome:
It is the case of having an excess of androgens in a body.

 17. Use of anti depressants and blood thinner:
Blood thinners and blood pressure drugs like Beta- blockers and non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen may cause hair loss.

18. Over styling:
Over styling of your hair over years like tight braids or hair weaves or chemical relaxers you use to straighten your hair may lead to hair fall.

19. Trichotillomania:
It is a impulse control disorder which causes people to compulsively pull their hair out.

Many people loss their hair as they enter their 50s and 60s.
